Electric propulsion manufacturer ePropulsion has confirmed that its co-founder and CEO, Danny Tao, has been included in Fortune China’s 2025 “40 Under 40” list. The annual list recognises individuals under the age of 40 who are considered to be influential in shaping business and industry.
The 2025 edition highlights innovators contributing to advances in artificial intelligence, green technology, healthcare, smart manufacturing and consumer industries. Fortune China notes that this year’s selection reflects individuals operating in what it describes as a period bridging the “digital native” and “intelligent native” eras.
Tao is recognised for his role in the adoption of electric propulsion in the marine sector. His focus on developing cleaner alternatives to fossil fuel-powered engines began more than a decade ago while studying mechanical engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In 2012, Tao co-founded ePropulsion alongside fellow students with the aim of advancing sustainable boating technology. The company has since developed from producing prototype outboards to offering a range of electric propulsion systems now in use in more than 100 countries.
The business produces outboards, pod drives and inboard systems, and under Tao’s leadership has expanded research and development capacity and established an international distribution network. Its products are applied in leisure, commercial and governmental sectors.
“This honour belongs to the entire ePropulsion team and is a recognition of our decade-long commitment to innovation and excellence,” says Tao. “The electrification and digital transformation of shipping are irreversible trends. ePropulsion will continue to advance core technologies, expand our global presence and, together with our partners, deliver greener and smarter boating experiences for users worldwide while contributing to the shared goal of global carbon neutrality.”
Founded in 2012, ePropulsion introduced the first brushless, direct-drive electric outboard motor to the market. It offers a portfolio including the Spirit and Navy series of 1–6kW outboards, as well as the H-Series of 60–250kW electric inboard motors for vessels up to 30m. In 2022, it launched the I-Series, an inboard system with integrated smart connectivity.
