Explomar’s Wave 300 electric outboard system is now in commercial operation in Portugal, powering the Terrazul Evø – described as the country’s first high-performance electric boat dedicated to maritime tourism.
The vessel, built by Dutch HDPE specialist Tideman Boats, has entered service with whale-watching operator Terra Azul in the Azores Islands.
The company says this rollout highlights how electric propulsion can be applied in the tourism market in environmentally sensitive regions.
The propulsion package comprises the Wave 300, a 300-horsepower electric outboard paired with the HEDB 125 high-energy density battery system, which, according to Explomar, provides between three and six hours of operation on a single charge. The system also includes its Smart Captain control platform, designed to give operators real-time insights into vessel status.

Terra Azul, established in 2001, has positioned the new boat within its programme of whale-watching and eco-tourism activities based out of Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel Island.
“This electric vessel is a result of our dedication to innovation that respects and preserves our unique environment, ensuring that the beauty and tranquillity of the Azores can be enjoyed for generations to come, hopefully soon free from noise pollution from conventional combustion engines,” says Miguel Cravinho, co-owner and COO at Terra Azul.
Explomar says the Wave 300 offers an operationally viable alternative to combustion engines. “We’re proud to power the first 300hp high-performance electric boat in Portugal – right here in the breathtaking Azores,” says Alex Dong, CEO of ExploMar. “Our electric outboard system quietly replaces the noise and fumes of traditional engines, offering a sustainable way to move through the water – one that respects both the people onboard and the wildlife around us.”
The Tideman hull, made from HDPE, was configured specifically for the Wave 300 system.
“The combination of an HDPE boat and electric propulsion is the most sustainable way to go,” adds Bruno Tideman, CEO of Tideman Boats. “Low carbon footprint, no ageing, inert, 100 per cent recyclable, and no need for anti-fouling makes this boat the best option for nature-sensitive activities.”
The Wave 300 is also part of Explomar’s flagship outboards that are now fully integrated with Aqua superPower’s global marine fast-charging network, offering a seamless, plug-and-play charging solution for electric vessels across a growing number of global ports and marinas.
The company says the deployment is part of a wider push into the European market, noting interest in electric propulsion from tourism and commercial operators across the UK, France, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.
